So I had a chance to watch the sequel to Grave Encounters last night with a bunch of friends. It was just horrible...
Grave Encounters 2 is about film school students struggling to find ideas for their final year project. One such student is Alex Wright - who is horror movie fan and vlogs his reviews on YouTube. After negatively reviewing Grave Encounters 1, Alex receives a video response from member 'Death Awaits' - the message is a short video clip of Lance Preston in patient clothes in a room at Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. Confused, Alex begins to research on the backstory of the film only to discover that the events of Grave Encounters were real. And that the actors in it are still missing. After a choppy but satisfying interview with the producer in LA, Alex receives another message from Death Awaits inviting him to Collingwood at 3 am. And we can all guess what happens after...

I love how producers decide to 'up the anti' in sequels. Interestingly, Grave Encounters 2 gets this treatment but still manages to retain the authenticity of the first. Unfortunately though, the first 30 mins are unbearably slow. Everyone felt uncomfortable watching these dudes smoke weed and get drunk all day at film school. I often asked myself, 'What does this even have to do with anything? Can we get to the hospital already?'
The greatest thing about this movie is Sean Rogerson. He steals the show as a crazy caveman-like person who has spent 9 years of his life surviving in the hospital. He decides to help Alex and his friends (whoever's left anyway) find a way out. Only to be lead to a red free standing door. Which is their only way out. *Dun Dun DUN!*
Unlike it's predecessor, the film struggles to even get started properly and it suffers from predictable scares - like demonic figures and little girls running after you and crawling out of windows. You're also treated to a very unsatisfying ending. Grave Encounters 2 is a perfect example of a great concept that wasn't executed properly.
