A bunch of teenages head off for a weekend in a cabin in the woods, only to find themselves isolated from the outside world. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, they find more than what they've bargained for. The campers are all under observation and now they must fend off the inevitable to find the truth behind their entrapment.
The Good
Here's the deal, Cabin In The Woods makes it exceedingly difficult to be disliked because it's got Joss Whedon behind it. This is the same dude who brought the Avengers to the big screen in all it's fantastic glory and box office records.
This guy always steals show! |
Even at this moment in time, I'm puzzled as to who this movie was made for. But having watched it even once, I can honestly that it's a pretty fun film to sit through. I couldn't help but laugh watching these teens get killed one after another. The whole concept of being 'simulated' by a bunch of mad scientists trying to abide by an ancient ritual adds a flare of originality - which is a good thing even in the midst of the massive cg gorefest you're made to endure.
Thor? Is that you? |
Cabin In The Woods has some pretty cool ideas and is definitely not your usual slasher flick. It's more like a spoof...a serious one...with a little bit of comic relief here and there and a very poetically just ending. The movie introduces characters that we all expect from a horror film these days: The virgin, the 'whore', the athlete, the scholar and some other guy that I can't recall - this dude was amazing!

The Bad
The movie is a comedy before a horror flick. Some may argue that it was meant to be this way, but even if it was, it's not all that apparent. Cabin In The Woods kicks off as one helluva movie and disintegrates into nothing more than a 'Meh! Whatever!' or 'What the hell just happened?' The latter works really well in a horror movie, but as you'll see, the conclusion is utterly absurd.
[Spoiler Alert]
Out of nowhere, Sigourney Weaver appears and reveals herself to be the brains of the whole organization keeping these kids trapped and basically sacrificing them to 'satisfy the Gods' in order to save the world. I know...WTF?!
