Wreck-It Ralph - 8 Thumbs Up!

To be honest, I didn't know exactly what to expect while going into Wreck-It Ralph over the weekend as I had never played the video game Fix-It Felix as a child; hence, rendering me unfamiliar of the the protagonist, Wreck-It Ralph.

First things first, you DON'T need to be a fan of the game or have even played it in order to watch the movies, and since I've never played the game, I won't be comparing and contrasting the movie with it. Now that that's out of the way, let's take a look at it's strengths.

The Good

Is that...Mr. Eggman?
It starts off with a narration by the Wreck-It Ralph attending a group therapy session along the famous video game villains the likes of of Satan, or as he himself likes to be called 'Satin' and Bowser etc. This little snippet at the beginning of the movie sets the stage for the rest of the hour and 48 minutes you're about to endure. Ralph's done being the bad guy, and being treated like garbage, he's fueled by the desire to be known as a winner for once. Simply put, he wants a better life.  Seeing as how I can't go further with the plot without even slightly spoiling it for you, let's just go with that for now.

Sympathy for these little guys I don't even know! :(
Rich Moore went about Wreck-It Ralph trying to make it appealing to all ages, and boy does he ever get the job done! The movie is filled with allusions that teens, parents, and their kids will enjoy. Not THAT hilarious, but you're sure to get a kick out of it...a lot of kicks. At even the most serious times, as with an Disney feature, Wreck-It Ralph doesn't take itself too seriously. It's loose, to the point where you get so attached to it's characters that you being to enjoy their miseries. But at the same time, when they fail, you feel sorry for them.

(Apologies for not being able to point out any of the characters. Giving these away will spoil the surprises in store for you!)

The most intriguing idea is that humans (not game characters) play a fairly important role while not explicitly being the focus of the movie. Due to the fact that you're basically living in an arcade, your job is to make sure the person 'playing' you has fun - you don't want to get 'unplugged' - YOU LOSE EVERYTHING! Wreck-It Ralph does an amazing job of relaying this to you that even though you're never introduced to anyone shown outside the video game world, you'll find yourself emotionally reacting to their actions.

The Bad

I absolutely despise having to do this section. But as much as I don't want to, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind before watching Wreck-It Ralph (as with any movie!)

PINK...PINK EVERYWHERE!

Don't get me wrong, the film is gorgeously vibrant. But at times, this turns into a minus rather than a plus. Especially when there's so much going on on-screen, your eyes have to be glued to it every moment. And this can prove irritating to some. Scenes change way too fast and the vivid colors of 'Sugar Rush' become exceedingly annoying. PINK...PINK EVERYWHERE! I saw this in 2D, and I'm so glad I did! Then again, it's totally up to you to judge, I'm just putting it out there. Also, stay on the lookout for flickering along the edges of the frame. At first I thought it was just me and my glasses, but as I was leaving my friend went, 'Did you notice the flickering? Why was that happening? Annoying as hell!'
